This is a patchwork kimono made of various fabrics.
The sleeves are made of tie-dyed silk fabric. The body is made of two different cotton fabrics with different patterns. The oriental patterns, such as pomegranates, are reminiscent of Indian and Indonesian designs of chintz, perhaps brought by the Dutch.
The silk sleeves are made of a lovely *"Fukura-suzume" fabric with a very Japanese motif.
The oriental pattern contrasts nicely with the Japanese pattern.

**Fukura-Suzume" is another name for a plumped-up sparrow, and refers to the state in which the sparrow's feathers are puffed up to protect it from the cold.

The plump appearance of the sparrows was also a good omen, as it was hoped that the sparrows would never starve and that their offspring would prosper**
