Vintage from the 1900s
These kimonos are called "Hanui 端縫い" costumes. It is said that the oldest examples date back to the Azuchi-Momoyama period. In those days, women carefully collected even the smallest scraps of cloth. "Hanui" was made by sewing together such scraps of silk for generations. The principle of "sewing the silk scraps together symmetrically" has always been followed, resulting in a refined design without any mess even after long years of wear and tear.
Kimonos made from silk were only owned by very wealthy old families until the Showa period (1926-1989).
However, thin cotton-filled end-stitched kimono made of reused silk were made in other parts of Akita, and were used as underwear.
